Beacon for Saturday lunch

cvc | Sep 5, 200411:41 AM

Business kept me near Culver City all day yesterday with a 90 minute break, so I met two friends for lunch at the new Beacon in the Helms complex. First, what a nice option for Saturday lunch. Much has already been said but I found the space, food and service very good. It was almost full at 1:30pm and we had a table in the corner by the rear entrance.

We started with the Beacon roll (smoked salmon wrapped in cucumber with creme fraiche) for $10.95, some fine grade yellowtail sashimi for $8.95 and a nice small avocado salad with cilantro for $4.50. Followed it with a flavorful miso Black Cod with crunchy green beans for $18.95 (still prefer Buddha's Belly by a hair), a less than 'crispy' shrimp salad with good flavor for $8.95 and an unexpectedly excellent hamburger with gruyere and bacon for $9.95 that came with outstanding fries. Did I say fusion?

We finished with a rice pudding brulee with mango that provided the right refreshing end for $6. One friend enjoyed his Buehler Chardonnay, the other his regular iced tea; and think wheatgrass should you order the iced green tea. Service was friendly and attentive with the only complaint, which is my one friend's valid ongoing complaint, being the absence of ice in iced tea - everywhere. He always has to order an extra glass of ice. Minor and worth noting; but hardly worth an entire article.

Final total: $76 including the tax with a $15 tip added.
