Looking to buy fresh BC strawberries from a ready-pick or u-pick farm. I need about 30 pounds. I normally call ahead to Bob Featherstone Farm in Richmond but lost his phone number and it's nowhere to be found online. Does anyone know if they are still in business? Or can someone suggest another farm in Burnaby, Vancouver or Richmond? I have been looking for organic/non-sprayed BC strawberries but it's not as important. And I'm guessing that BC strawberries may be ready soon. Thank you for any leads.
Here's a link from the BC Strawberry Farmers Association: https://bcstrawberries.com/farms
You can search for U pick etc.
Emma Lea on Westham Island is often interviewed at the beginning of strawberry season. Family farm.
Former board denizen fmed found these on Sunday at Richmond Country Farms, east end of Steveston Hwy: https://twitter.com/fmedeats/status/8...
Replying to myself to say that we were lucky to nab 15 lbs of beautiful strawberries from GJ Farms at 11300 4 Road at Steveston Highway (604) 272-4033 yesterday. No one is selling flats now because of limited quantities but we were happy to pay $4 a pound for such great quality. I will check back with them a bit earlier next year if the season is as short as it was in 2017, with some farms opening only on June 15. Also grabbed 3 pounds of shelling peas which I'm about to tackle for $3 a pound. Happy Canada Day (150+)!
My sister just got back from Richmond Country Farms (just east of Hwy 99 onSteveston Hwy). She picked up a whole flat of jam strawberries (smaller berries, very ripe) for $10. Fantastic flavour, I managed to eat a bowl full before she started making jam. She reports that they were also selling the smaller baskets (the nicer ones, for eating) for $4 / lb..
We almost went there! Were they really selling 15 lbs for $10? What a deal! I wasn't making jam so needed eating berries. And I shouldn't have said "no one" was selling flats, just that we couldn't find any places that were in our wanderings around Richmond on Friday. $4 per pound for the eating berries seemed to be the going rate for the whole short season this year. We had Mum's strawberry shortcake with 5 lbs of the fresh ones on Friday night, then Mum and I prepped our traditional strawberry sauce to freeze. You only cook a little of the base with pectin and sugar -- the rest of the berries go in fresh sliced. As close to summer as you can get on pancakes, served with sour cream, on a cold winter morning.
Just heard today that Emma Lea Farms in Ladner/Westham Island has their second crop of strawberries ready for picking or pick-up.
