BBQ & Tamales in Memphis

I just got back from probably my 50th trip to Memphis over the last 20 years and while I ate at some of my favorite Q spots (my favorite sandwich place, Brads on Waring closed a few years ago and I've been searching), one of my most satisfying sandwiches is always the first one when I get into town. Some Q experts may scoff but, I leave the airport and get right off 240 on Getwell and head down to Tops at Getwell and Rhodes and get the jumbo sandwich plate with beans and slaw sides. I sit there in my booth with the best coke (great ice) and I could eat Tops sandwiches until I was ill.

One thing I did want to ask Memphis Q historians was about the origins of tamales at some Q spots. I always forget about them when I'm savoring Q on my way to town and then when I get there, it's always an added bonus because I love tamales. I always think of tamales as Mexican but as a chowhound, I'm not complaining that they serve them at some spots.
