The baked BBQ pork buns at the Cafe Bakery on 1345 Noriega St in SF are excellent but it takes a while to wind my way out there from where I live in the East Bay. The pork was nicely diced and well seasoned and there was lots of filling - maybe 4-5 times as much as some of the other buns I tried today. Bought a box of them today and decided to stop in Oakland and at Ranch 99 on the way home. Shan Dong has pork steamed buns but the filling is of the ground pork /dim sum nature - not the BBQ pork style I was looking for. At the Far East Mall, Sheng Kee has a nice looking bun with only a tablespoon or so of filling. Ranch 99's baked pork bun had twice as much filling but it was all ground up and not all that interesting. I know that there are lots of other bakeries around....anybody have a favorite for BBQ pork buns? they could be baked or steamed.
