This (see below) sounds pretty cool to me. It's been in planning for a looong time, by some veteran chowhounds. I'm not sure if Ward's Island is Manhattan or Outer Boros (I don't know WHERE it is!), but I guess I'll post it here.
I'm not at all privvy to the financial inner workings, but I get the strong impression that it's a sincere labor of love thing, so if you're a NYC 'cue fan, you may want to pay up in advance, per the request. I'd love to see zillions of these sorts of events happening, and I suppose you would, too. It's worth supporting...if events like this are successful, more people will do 'em.
BBQ NYC is an afternoon and early evening picnic event to be held on Ward's
Island on Saturday August 16th. The menu will be authentic slow smoked dry
rubbed pork, brisket, chicken, sausage, etc cooked all day by two barbecue
chefs. Sides and snacks will be brought potluck by attendees. The picnic
will feature informal cooking classes and sporting events, unlimited food
and drink for which we will be accepting advance "donations" prior to the
event. Visit the web site (link below) for more info on directions, sign up forms,
donations and BBQ NYC's mission. All queries should be directed to THM at
