I just went there this weekend because it was on the Red Line, and so was I. -Really good- BBQ. I had a pulled pork sandwich with fries and cole slaw. First of all, let me get this out of the way - it was only $6. $6!!!! And this is a nice restaurant, not a stand or even a grubby bar-type place.
So, to the chow. First, I went right to the fries - I mean, fries are on your plate, you gotta try the fries! Outstanding. Really, absolutely great fries. Very tasty - I mean, fries are almost always going to be good, even if they're bad, but these were really, really, really good. Tasty, light, not too greasy but not that thick, over-potatoey under-cooked don't-even know it's a fry-type fry. Great fries.
So, to the pulled pork sandwich. I was a little wary at first, because I was thinking it would be more stringy looking, and what was on my bun - which was crisp - were lots of morsels or pork. Still lookin' like pulled pork, but I was going into it expecting a more shredded appearance. I dolloped on a forkful of cole slaw and took a bite. Heaven. Haven't had a sandwich that good in so long. Then, the bartender tapped me on the shoulder and let me know that I was clearly a rookie at this place. They have a rotating rack of BBQ sauces for you to choose from - Kansas City style, Memphis, Carolina ,and Southern (I think) BBQ sauces. One's pretty vinegar-y, one's really molassey and sweet - I can't comment on the other two, because once I got to the thick and sweet one, I dumped it all over my sandwich and went to town. $6. Unbelievable.
This place Riedel's (maybe Riedell's?) is near the UDC metro, on Connecticut just above Van Ness. It is a) outstanding, b) cheap, and c) definitely open during lunch (I asked.) I don't know what their deal is on the weekends - I went this Sunday afternoon and the place was just about empty. I guess that's understandable... new restaurant, not a very residential area... oh, and they mentioned that it was their first weekend open. Regardless, I'll definitely be back. Maybe next week I'll bring my boss.
