Yes you heard me right, BBQ in the Hartford area.
My wife and I have been fans of BBQ food for as long as we both can remember. Messy, saucy ribs with cole slaw; beans; and corn bread.
Previosly we had ventured out to Little Mark's in Vernon when we were willing to make the drive or we would go to WB Cody's in Bloomfield and try to bury the ribs in sauce to improve them, but in the last few months that has all changed.
Little Marks opened on Rt 44 in Avon and is excellent, except for the fact that they are so busy it is hard to get in and they have run out of some side dishes everytime we have gone.
The Cookhouse which is also in New Milford has opened a spot in East Hartford. It is not a prime location, hidden behind the car dealers, but it is next to the Harley Davidson dealer and the food is so good that people who know will find it. The BBQ is true and delicious, the menu also offers a variety of of other excellent entrees and you have to keep an eye on the specials board. Last time we went they had pulled pork tacos, which were amazing. The food is fresh, consistently great, fairly priced and has already made its way to the top five of our restaurant list, especially if we take the kids with us.
As places open and close my family and I brave the new hoping to find a diamond in the rough, or atleast some place worth the trip back. This country has so many eater who happily gorge themselves on anything put in front of them that ofcourse poor quality restaurants can survive, but the job of true diners (not eaters) is to find the quality food which others overlook.
