BBQ curiousities satisfied

This weekend, the new gourmet shop on Abbott Kinney in Venice opened. It is approximately across the street from the French Market Cafe. On Saturday they had BBQ King restaurant (near downtown) grilling in the parking lot and selling there sauce by the bottle. They offered a rib dinner with beans and Potato Salad for $5.00. I had never been to the restaurant but had been curious. Beans were pretty good, P. Salad was storebought or tasted just like it. Ribs were kinda tough and not the least bit smokey. Sauce tasted like KC Masterpiece. A lot of information for 5 bucks. On Sunday I was still looking for a BBQ fix. I stopped by Outdoor Grill in Culver City. I had the 1/2 rack of Baby Backs, beans and Mac and Cheese ($15.00). Mac and Cheese was really good. Beans were really Chili Beans not your typical Baked Beans. Not bad though. Ribs were tender and had a nicely flavored dry rub on them. Not smokey in the least but pretty enjoyable just the same. The sauce tasted just like French Salad Dressing. I took one taste and left it alone. I am glad that I had these experiences but next time I am looking for BBQ in the Venice area I will head back to the old standby Benny's BBQ on Lincoln just South of Washington. It may not be the best in town but you will certainly taste the smoke. I still have to try 4J's on Lincoln but on my 3 attempts, they have always been closed. They are closed Sunday, Nonday and Tuesdays and they don't open until 1:00 or something. If someday I time it right, I will give a report.
