Inspired by yesterday's interesting post by reggaegirl, I went to this place today. I've never understood the obsession with BBQ on this board, especially the strangely passionate debates that come along with it... so maybe I'm not the best person to give a real review. But I went to check it out for the experience as much as the food.
It is on the south side of El Segundo Blvd. just west of Avalon. The name of the church is 'Prayer Assembly Church of God in Christ'. (And if you google for that you can actually see a picture of it.) They have their own parking lot and street parking is also pretty easy.
There were two *very* large smokers going strong, so it looks like a pretty serious operation. Also, the menu is very clearly posted, so there's no awkwardness from not knowing exactly what to do.
I went there around 2:30 this afternoon and there was a fairly long line (good sign), and they have a good system of taking your order in line so it moved really fast.
Anyway, usually at a place like this I try to get the first or second thing on the menu, so I got the ribs. Again, I don't understand the various subtleties that people argue about so much, but I thought they were very good. Definately quite smokey, and tender but not of the falling off the bone type. I thought the sauce was a little too sweet, but that seems to be what I always think about this kind of BBQ. In summary, I'll just say I liked them a lot. Also quite generous portions... certainly a full meal.
