it's not in my Bayless...lentil soup with plantanos question

Making a spicy green lentil soup, and recollecting that the best lentil soup I ever had had some chunks of sweet plantains thrown in . . .
any Mexican cooks out there able to tell me if I need to fry the plantains before throwing them in the soup?
