Back Bay vs. South End

bluecheese&bacon | Mar 25, 2003 04:33 PM

I've just moved back to the Back Bay after a 7 year hiatus, and have spent the last few week exploring not only that neighborhood, but also the South End. I confess I am very pleasantly surprised with all of the good and - most importantly neighborly - restaurants in the South End - Metropolis, Acquitaine, Dish, Gallia, Franklin Cafe, Nightingale, Truc, etc. By comparison, the Back Bay seems sterile and touristy. Am I just discovering what everyone else already knows? If this view is generally shared, do people have a view about what the underlying casue of this phenomenon is? (high rents in the Back Bay?) And, can anyone point me to places in the Back Bay that are closer to some of these South End spots that I mentioned? Thanks.
