Bay Fung Tong – new in SF

Today’s posts about the Dungeness crab at BFT in Oakland reminded me that Cynthia and I stopped by its new location on Balboa in SF last weekend. Open for a couple months, the staff confirmed that it has the same ownership as the restaurant in Oakland. There’s a grand opening banner outside and the place has the characteristic fluorescent colored paper signs on the fresh scrubbed walls. We took a look at the tanks in the back which were very clean and filled with lively seafood.

As in Oakland, the extensive menu’s completely translated into English. The prices seem a little bit higher, but still reasonable by City standards although we didn’t see serving size. Bay Fung Tong style crab is $14.99.

The twist here is that dim sum is also offered. Prices are $1.80 for small, $2.30 for medium, and $2.80 for large. While that seems a little high for the neighborhood, two-thirds of the items are in the small category, and there are only two large dishes (poached beef tripe and prawn rice noodle roll). The other “c’mon down” pricing trick is two “daily specials” offered at 55¢ each with a maximum of two orders for each item. These were steamed beef ball and dry fish & peanut congee, each normally $1.80.

Again, we didn’t eat here, but thought it was worth mentioning it here for ‘hounds to check it out. Please let us know how you like the food. Maybe a cross-bay comparison?
