I was passing through Sacramento Thursday and looked for some place new to try. I see that yet another in the chain of Asian Pearl/The Kitchen/New Canton opened on Stockton Boulevard in mid August and decided to give it a try.
The new location is definitely a step above the Asian Pearl that opened in Citrus Heights earlier this year and may be as good as the one in Millbrae.
Unlike the one at Citrus Heights, they have carts with the dim sum and you pick what you want. I got nothing too adventurous and I'll say everything with shrimp and chives and just shrimp was a winner. Freshly prepared and tasty ingredients.
I tried some dim sum at a Reno restuarant where the rice absorbed some of the flavor of the tea leaf that wrapped it. That didn't happen with the leaf-wrapped dim sum at Asian Pearl 2009 but maybe it wasn't supposed to. The rice and other ingredients in that dim sum still tasted great.
The highlight of the meal was something not on the dim sum menu.. I thought I was ordered the rib eye-tofu dish but instead ended up with the shrimp-stuffed tofu. It was still delicious and now I have an excuse to go back sooner to get the rib eye-tofu dish.
The price wasn't too bad, especially for the quality.
Service was good.
The location is a large room split in half by a divider. I bet they remove the divider on Sundays and the place is a freaking zoo. I had a short wait Thursday just after noon.
This is really good dim sum and I suspect Asian Pearl 2009 will become a Chowhound favorite in Sacramento.
The picture at left is the shrimp-stuffed tofu and the second from the right is the shrimp and chives.
