My 6 year old & infant twins & I were driving around Carroll County yesterday & stopped by not only Baugher's restaurant, but also their orchard down Rte 140. A previous poster or 2 said it wasn't much worth stopping here, but I must disagree. The restaurant is a vintage sort of place - good home-cooking at low prices. I enjoyed my turkey salad, and where else can you find sides like apple fritters or corn fritters? Their potato salad & even their rolls are home-made. But definitely save room for their desserts - home-made pies & ice creams, again at such low prices. We were there for a late lunch (2pm) on a weekday, but the place was bustling.
We then headed to the orchard, thinking we could pick-your-own peaches, but alas, they only offer that Fri-Sun. But you can still buy so many goodies there, right next to their own bakery. I walked off with a cherry pie, apple dumpings, a quart of nectarines & corn on the cob, even a bird-house decoration for our Xmas tree. They also have a produce market at the restaurant & sell their baked goods there too.
We took a long scenic drive down Rte 31 (thru several old-fashioned small-town Main Streets) to Frederick & visited South Mountain Dairy in Middletown where I picked up a quart of full-cream milk, several yogurts & some Colby cheese. They sell their own ice cream there too.
They have an open house scheduled for Oct. 18 & 19 where they'll have demos of how they make cheese & butter.
