Battered rehydrated shiitake mushrooms?

So I've got this bag of dried whole shiitakes sitting in my cupboard. There's nothing like biting into a nice juicy mushroom, so I was thinking about rehydrating some and then battering them and deep-frying them, and serving them with hoisin sauce or oyster sauce or something for dipping. Kind of like an Asian twist on the regular old battered mushrooms.
What I'm wondering is if they might turn out to be too 'meaty' or chewy? Or will they simply melt in your mouth like the little buttons? Maybe if I gave them a good boil rather than soaking them in water the end result would be more tender?
