To baste or not to baste

That is the question. I am brining my bird, and I want to know if I should baste it, or will basting with the pan drippings make the bird too salty. I kinda feel like basting is useless, as the juice cannot penetrate the skin anyway, so is this a moot point?

Should I just put some butter on the outside of the bird (and under the skin) throw it in the oven and not think about it till it is done?
