Earlier this year a number of Chowhounds got together for dinner at Maykadeh (Persian restaurant on Green St. in North Beach). Several of us brought wine, and it turned out that we had some super Zinfandels: a bottle of Ridge Pagani Ranch 1991 (first vintage) and a bottle of Carlisle Gum Tree Ranch 2001 (last vintage: the vineyard property was sold to a developer). There were enough other wine to go around, so we didn't open these bottles, but we resolved to hold a future special event to open and compare these special wines.
The future is here. There are a few seats left for a special Cal-Basque dinner at Piperade where these wines (plus a bottle of Pagani Ranch 2001) will be featured.
The dinner will be at Piperade's big bench where eight (or more) people can sit and sample a wide range of dished family-style. Piperade specializes in small and large plates that are perfect for sharing.
Piperade has been uniformly well reviewed on Chowhound and has become one of the most popular destinations in the city. The rich spicy Cal-Basque menu should go well with our Cal-Zin wines.
If you are interested in joining us for this event, please send an email to my address shown above and I will confirm with details.
