Admittedly, I'm biased because this place is so close to home (7th & Folsom) but i went last night for maybe the 4th or 5th time, and I am finally compelled to write.
1st course was Plamuk Yang, calamari in tamarind vinaigrette - spicy. Unbelievable flavors, squid cooked just right - crisp, tender, not the least bit rubbery. Cilantro and julienned carrots added to the flavor.
My friend and I split two entrees: seafood curry and bamboo shoots in garlic and ginger.
The curry was green, and perfectly spiced (we asked for it on the mild side). Scallops, prawns and mussels - and lots of them. Not stingy like some other places. I'm pretty squeamish about under or overcooked scallops and these were neither. There were a few veggies floating around, but we paid more attention to the base, which was so good we finally just threw a bunch of rice in the bowl to sop it up with.
The bamboo shoots, too, were terrific. Crisp, full-flavored... Slices of ginger and garlic aplenty. I'm not much of a vegetarian, but I ate these up. They were a great complement to the curry, too.
We passed on dessert, but I've had their coconut ice cream in the past and it's heavenly.
The only thing I'd really pass over here is beef. The quality of the beef isn't exceptional (usually skirt steak), even if the sauces are good.
One caveat - the wine list is... sparse. But, they do carry one of my favorite house wines, Cline Zinfandel. And at $18/bottle, it's really only an $8 markup. The wine is easy drinking, and goes pretty well with this spicier food, too.
I suggested to their manager that they should look into carrying a few well-chosed Rieslings and Gewurtzraminers which would be spectacular with the food. Corkage is $10.
