Basil Press in Athens

I had written off Basil Press several years ago for poor service and dul food, but decided to take my wife and step daughter out there for my wife's birthday since we had had a dinner there the day I proposed to her.
Much to our joy the food and service has returned to a much better standard than it had been last time. I went Wednesday so they had a Prix Fixe deal which was a good choice for me. The ladies ordered off the regular menu. Appetizers were excellent. I had perfectly cooked shrimp with mild bacon and apples. Unlikely but perfectly balanced. The others were gorgeous to look at and quite tasty according to my companions. My main course was mahi mahi; again perfectly cooked with a mango and avocado salsa on top, my wife had huge scallops again properly done but the pasta they were sitting on had too much salt in the sauce. The crab cake was just OK. Deserts were huge but very nice. I had the apple gallett which I enjoyed to the last crumb. Service was attentive and accurate, The wine list short but well chosen, the prices were fair. There are the table side preparations of Cesar salad and flaming deserts if you go for those sort of things and over all a positive experience. Hugh's restaurants (5 & 10 and the National) are clearly a cut above but for Athens it's nice to see the Press has raised its standards again to be a worthwhile spot to visit.
