So I usually don't get a chance to eat Indian food but like once a quarter. So I was really craving some the other week and was in the 54/55 corridor and had heard some positive things about Basera. For those not in the know, Basera is in the former Oh! Brians and I don't remember what it was before that.. it is in front of the shopping center that has Briggs on Hwy 55. The place has dishes you can order but I think everyone there (especially at lunch time) was going to the buffet.
First let me get the biggest con out of the way... lack of help. There was the front of house manager (possibly the owner since he was dressed up), one plain clothes gentleman who was stocking and checking on the food and from what I can tell only one other person who was bussing the tables and, on the chance you got her attention, refilling your waters.
That being said the food was very good in my limited and humble opinion. The buffet had a vegetarian side and a meat side. And then along the window were more items like Samosa chaat and Kerala fish curry. There was a dish next to the Kheer and before the chutneys though that tasted sweet but didn't seem like a dessert called Dahi Vada. Either way, it helped cool my mouth down from some of the items that were spicy (to me). They also had two separate large containers with Gulab and something that was a milk dish with tapioca pearls in it. Unfortunately, it had no name plate on it. They had small chunks of goat on the bone and the tandoor chicken actually tasted like it had been grilled or by a flame. This is also the first buffet I can remember that had Idlli in addition to naan.
On the way out, I noticed a sign for them having a "themed" buffet night one was to be biryani based and the other dosa based.
Lastly, can someone please tell me what I'm supposed to do with the mint/anise seed. Am I to chew and swallow? Chew and spit out?
Anyways, I thought it was a better than average representation of typical buffet items, but I would love to hear from others who have been and have a better knowledge of what things should and shouldn't taste like.
