bar milano quick review

jon | Apr 27, 2008 07:00 PM

had a very nice enjoyable dinner at bar milano tonight. room is nice, lots of marble on the walls which it made it pretty loud in the room. service was impecable (save for a mishap during dessert). somelier was incredible, recommending fantastic wines which were cheaper than i thought we would like.

bread was good. the onion bread was delicious.

for appetizer, had the potato croquette which was was a potato croquette filled with a runny egg and topped with cavier. absolutely inredible with the runny egg running everywhere. spectacular. the bagna cauda salad was also good. blanced brussel sprouts, carrots, bread crumbs with a garlic/anchovy dressing. very nicely done. as with the entrees and primi's, antipasti portions were tiny. we ordered the above two for 4 and in reality it would probably barely feed 2.

primi were also very good but small. meat ragu with taglietelle and shrimp agnelotti. ragu was nice, pasta was nice and toothsome. shrimp agnelotti were also good. they were nice and split the pasta into 2 portions each of the shrimp and meat. again, portions were pretty tiny but delicious.

for entrees i had the veal chop which was milanese style with breadcrumbs. it was spectacular if fairly fatty. one had the fried rabbit on an agrodulce mix which was incredible and i highly suggest it. tasty like amazing fried chicken but better. my wife had the grilled tuna which was good but again a tiny portion. it would have been nice if there were contorni offered but there weren't so veal chop came solo with two dried out mushrooms.

for dessert we had the vanilla spuma and the straciatella with chocolate cones. i HIGHLY recommend the straciettal dessert on the chocolate cones. vanilla spuma was good, came on a chocolate-brownie sort of thing. both were delicious. only problem, it took a good 15 minutes AFTER we were done with dessert for coffee and tea to come. that was pretty ridiculous. opening week problems i imagine (at least they comped the coffee and tea).

all in all, it was very good. i'd give it a few more weeks to get all of the kinks worked out, but generally service was spot-on and food was delicious (if small portions). we will back.
