Bar Bites @ Duke's Common | Healdsburg - Sonoma County

Melanie Wong | Aug 12, 201803:21 AM     5

Duke's Common opened in February, taking over the space formerly occupied by Scopa. It's a collaboration between Chef Shane McAnelly of The Brass Rabbit (and Chalkboard) and the Team of Duke’s Spirited Cocktails. Duke's Common is right in between both establishments on the plaza. The concept is to serve street-y snacks for $10 that can be enjoyed at its own venue or at Duke's Spirited Cocktails. It also provides a much needed pre-dinner are for The Brass Rabbit.

A friend joined me for a few bites at the outdoor table three weeks ago. My favorite dish was the freshly fried corn dog pops (4 to an order) served with spicy stadium mustard, $6. The chopped salad, $7, featured pickled beets, crisp radish, shaved fennel, toasty seeds, goat cheese, and vibrant Little Gems lettuce in a bright red wine vinaigrette. Despite the name, the salad was not chopped. Still it was nice to be able to order beautiful greens like this on a bar menu. The Dungeness crab roll, $7, might look small but it was generously packed. Though described as seasoned with preserved lemon, harsher herbs and spices seemed to be in play that obliterated the sweet natural taste of the crab.

I was pleased with my rum punch special, refreshing on a warm evening with good tart-sweet balance. The Manhattan seemed to be missing something.

All in all, this was a pretty good showing. It was just the right amount of food to temper the effects of our alcoholic beverages for a reasonable price. I'll be back to try the daily family meal for $10. The town needs more moderately priced spots like this.
