Banyan, Manhattan Bch-Big swing and a MISS

We were visiting down south (LA) and decided to eat dinner with some friends from the "Beaches." We were wandering MB for coffee and saw the Banyan Indonesian Restaurant. I noticed a plethora of rave write-ups in the entrance so we made a reservation for dinner.

When we returned, they had lost the reservation despite our having double checked it but the help was very nice. The placed was mobbed and also serving a vast amount of take-out. Prices were reasonable esp for MB and free corkage was allowed.

The only problem was the food. It just wasn't very good despite 6 of us trying a large variety of items including 2 each doing a huge combo plate. Nothing seemed great and only a few items were at all interesting.

I will admit that none of us had tried Indonesian before but all of us like various Asian cuisines, 2 were of Asian ethnicity- one an immigrant. Maybe we just don't know good Indonesian? No one wanted to try this restaurant again. My only explanation for the places popularity is that the prices are very reasonable for that area but it still isn't a deal due to the quality of the food.
