I just returned from a weekend in Bangkok (preceded by several days in Chiang Mai). Guided by some of the rave reviews on Chowhound, we had dinner on Saturday at Spice Market. What a disappointment.
The room was nice, as was the presentation, but the food was disappointing; in terms of flavor, I've had far better Thai food on the street in Bangkok or in restaurants in LA.
Of the five dishes that we ordered, none was a standout. The Crispy morning glory with green mango salad was best, in that it was interesting -- kind of like a very light tempura of morning glory -- but none of them were truly worthy of repeats. The curry (red with roast duck) had some heat but little other flavor. The crab shells stuffed with crab and minced pork was bland. I was surprised to find that the food lacked any of the herbal notes (cilantro, lemongrass, basil, mint, etc.) that I usually associate with Thai food.
There was no dish that made me say "I want to come back and eat here again". It reminded me of average Thai food in NY (though prettier in presentation).
Maybe we ordered poorly; maybe the kitchen was having an off night. But given the expense, and the wealth of amazing food that Bangkok has to offer, I don't think I'll be heading back anytime soon.
PS Does anyone have any tried-and-true suggestions for really amazing upscale dining in BKK?
