Bangkok - Khrua Rommai report

For those who don't know, my girlfriend Eva and I are on a 6 month southeast asia tour, currently in Bangkok. We returned from a visit to the North a few days ago. I'd like to thank the chowhound who recommended Khrua Rommai (16 Sukhumvit Soi 36, Skytrain Thong Lo). It's a tiny shack of a place (like most restaurants in Thailand not on the tourist strips), in an out of the way spot and the food was really utterly fantastic. We ordered the 1/2 roast chicken (which was really only about 2 drumsticks and 2 thighs but wonderful), the nam prik ong (spicy green chili paste served with perfectly cooked veggies) and we got the northern style sticky rice to accompany it. Also got the minced pork with Chinese olives and lastly the stir fried morning glory. Holy mama... the stir fried morning glory was so smoky and delicious... we were using the sticky rice to sop up the smoky juice. The roast chicken had lightly crispy skin and was utterly juicy. The minced pork with chinese olives was a totally unique flavor, salty and sweet but unlike anything I've tasted before. Lastly the nam prik was good but not something I'd crave... spicy, vegetables tender but still crispy. Total price was 270 Baht (about $6.80).

If you're here in Bangkok, you must go.
