For the stroll home from breakfast at Jam http://www.chowhound.com/post/breakfa... , I routed myself via Bang Bang Pie to pick up some treats for later. Scanning the list of pies, sold whole or by the slice, I focused on the crust styles more than the type of filling itself.
Butterscotch meringue featured a fairly loose butterscotch custard underneath toasted, dense meringue in a shortbread crust. By the time we tried it after dinner, the shortbread crust on the bottom was completely wet and soaked through. I could get some sense of what it aspired to be by tasting the thicker rim of the crust and found it pretty neutral as well as a little underbaked with raw flour notes. Though I liked the shiny meringue crown well enough, the custard and soggy crust left me pretty flat.
Caramel apple fared better with firmish slices of tart-sweet apple under a crunchy oat crumble topping drizzled with salty caramel. The leaf lard pastry crust was very flaky and short. A bit wet on the bottom, but not too bad, and the fluted rim part of the crust was particularly good.
I didn't try the biscuits here, but maybe someone out there can tell us about them.
