I had read mixed information about Bambou - the
carib place on E 14th. Well, the other night there
were three tables occupied at 9:30, one new waiter
who was terrified of screwing up, one new chef,
all adding up to one unpleasant meal.
Waited in the bar area for quite a while before the
waiter saw us. Thereupon he didn't come up to
greet us (the barkeep had said that the waiter
would be with us in a minute several minutes ago).
Finally the friendly barkeep seats us. The place is
empty save one table. Minutes go by. We get menu and
waiter is worried about placing the winelist
on the edge of the table (tables for two are small).
Minutes go by. We have long selected what we want.
Waiter is unfamiliar with menu and we repeat our
order a few times and he writes it down. The
hostess/owner? brings us a small portion of chilled
soup with fruit and semi-bitter paste (chef's
compliment, the best part of the meal,
alas the only good part of the meal).
The mixed drinks are so-so. I had one of the fruit
'tinis - forgettable and I have indeed forgotten.
We get our starters and my friend's salad is missing
a minor detail: the artichoke. Waiter hurries to the
kitchen and comes back to inform us that the chef
is new and that the artichoke will be ready soon.
My soup is boring - "passion mango" hmmm. Canned
mango perhaps? While we await the missing artichoke
we eat the rest of our appetizer - i am done and
the waiter promptly jumps to take it away while
my friend is still waiting for the artichoke.
Minutes go by. Minutes go by. Did I say minutes
went by? We were going to be late for an event and we
spent a few minutes trying to locate the waiter
(there are 3 tables in use and so the waiter has
taken refuge in the kitchen to alleviate himself
from the boredom) and tell him to move things along.
I hard ordered the jerk chicken veg style and it had
238128 grams of salt, the soy had texture and rice
was so-so. A washout. $25. The veg chicken was more
expensive than the non-veg chicken. Go figure.
My friend's salmon was bony. We had a nice collection.
We gave another heads up saying we had to leave soon.
Minutes went by and finally we were able to lure
the waiter from his refuge. We beat a hasty retreat
having paid a pretty penny for a bad meal.
I hope this is not the norm there. Sigh.
