Beyond Baluccis: Seeking Better Indian in Carroll Gardens

Where is the best Indian food in greater Gowanus or downtown Brooklyn?

So far, I have only tried Balucci's on Smith street. I found it consistently adequate, but not spectacular. The best thing I've had there so far has been the Kerala Boatman's curry, which was delicious. They also make good Naan and pretty good mango lassis, if I remember to ask for them "not-to-sweet".

I've been really disappointed by the vegetarian dishes, which tend to be heavy and oily. The alu chole was good. They actually took me seriously and made it spicy. The roasted eggplant curry was a thick homogenous puree that would have been more appropriate as a sauce than an entree.

I would love to know more about the different regional Indian cuisines. I would like to find out which places specialize in which styles.
