The New Balaban's

rothdan | Apr 30, 200705:30 AM     4

Went to Balabans with great expectations from an special restaurant of the past. Could they rekindle the atmosphere and food from the past. They did not pass. The food was average at best. Service was ok, but was told to put our orders in now since the kitchen was running behind. First mistake !!! Portions were small with the morel appetizer ( maybe 3 morels) and the foie gras was a size of 2 quarters and thin for $14.00 The main courses were not memorable.Saturday night no one was at the bar. It used to be a very busy bar with lots of action. The new owners have made a calculated mistake in the way the run the restaurant. I will be interested to see how others respond. The one good point , the place was clean with much of the past still there.
