baking stones - Storage, use, cleaning

How do you do it? Where and how do you store it? When you use it how do you keep it from getting tatty? Does it matter if it gets tatty? Do you use it on the floor of the oven or a shelf? Does it matter if it gets all brown and grungy?

I keep mine (covered with foil) on the bottom of the oven when it's not in use and have been leaving it there to use it. I sometimes leave the pizza (pie, etc) in a pan, sometimes slip a piece of foil underneath (or parchment).

As it never gets dirty, cleaning isn't a problem, but perhaps I'm not getting the best effect from the stone treating it this way.
