Baking quantities help

Hello all,

I was going to make Martha's recipe for vanilla cupcakes, which I've made before very successfully. However I'm looking at the recipe again and it seems a bit odd.

1.5 cups of butter, or 12 tbsp - isn't 1.5 cups 24 tbsps of butter?

It also calls for 1.5 cups of sugar so I'm tempted to go with the same amount of butter.

Then 3 cups of flour. Twice as much flour as butter or sugar? But then it uses 1.25 cups of milk.

Argh! It worked out perfectly last time but I can't remember if I tweaked, and the page I've titled in my notebook is usefully blank. Help! Maybe I'll just use the standard 4-4-4-2 English sponge recipe but I remember these cakes as being fantastic :(
