new bakery/patisserie discovery in washington heights

We were just at the morris jumel mansion today, and what do we see on the corner of 159th and edgecombe? a corner window with bread and pastry within!!!

The most unlikely location, not a single other commercial enterprise for blocks.

Of course we went in.

Hot croissants were just coming out of the large bakery area. We bought some apple turnovers, croissants and sour dough bread. Croissants were smallish, but well browned and flaky within. Nice yeasty flavor and golden toned dough. Comparable to Patisserie Claude downtown and better than Les Ambassades. But true judgement will have to be reserved for when they are cold. Only a dollar each. Tarts and muffins and molten brownies looked alluring...next time. Everything baked on premises, and the size of the ovens/tables and such implies a large wholesale enterprise. Certainly bigger than that little storefron would suggest.

Think the place is called OC Bakery and Tea Shop. They serve coffee and tea. No seating, but the MJM park is only a block away with some lovely benches. The slightly shy baker said they have been there 4 months. Has anyone else been? So glad they have arrived in this part of town. Our local croissant desires are now sated!
