The Bakers Against Racism movement created the world's biggest bake sale on Saturday, June 20, uniting thousands of professional and home bakers across 16 countries and more than 200 U.S. cities to fundraise for organizations battling racism. Collectively they raised more than $1.8 million!
My chance to participate as a consumer was via Ad Astra Bread Company in Seaside that put together a $12 cookie box with all the proceeds donated to the NAACP Monterey County Branch Scholarship Fund.
Sea Salt Karova Sable
Rye Shortbread with Ginger
Tahini Wedding Cookie
Whole Wheat Hippie Cookie
As I sat at my laptop to place my order, it occurred to me that these might be one-of-a-kind cookies never to be seen again at this bread baker. So I bought two boxes . . . good thing, as the cookies in this offering were fantastic. My favorite, the chocolate sable, riffing on Pierre Herme's Korova peace cookie, totally rocked. https://leitesculinaria.com/3354/reci... The Tahini Wedding Cookie looked like the typical powder sugar coated Mexican wedding cookie. But tasted deeply of sesame and the texture was layered with a texture similar to halvah. The Rye Shortbread with Ginger was crumbly and buttery tasting. And the Whole Wheat Hippie Cookie was enormous in size, barely sweet, and probably talked its way into the box under the pretense of being nutritious and healthy.
My very favorite was the Chocolate Chip Cookie that tasted like browned butter, molasses and very high quality chocolate. And I noticed when I picked up my bread on Friday that it had been available that day, 3/$5, but was already sold out. Because some of this cookie collection may appear again, I decided to post about them.
I've been a customer and major fan of Ad Astra since it opened in October. During the pandemic, I've made a point to buy something every time I'm in the area, as this is one of the small businesses that we need to keep alive. The menu has been pared down for now. No more flatbreads, sandwiches or meal items for dining-in. For pick-up at the store, the staff are selling out of the large windows that front the sidewalk for maximum safety. It's a comfortable retail set-up during these times.
