There are a handful of dishes at Don Peppe's that simply cannot be beat. The baked clams are out of this universe, and the salad served family style is like a Sicilian aunt would toss onto the table. Unlike many Italian restaurants, it's not overly oily, but it DOES have a squirt or two more vinegar than most, which works and really feels 'homestyle'. All the variations of linguine with clam sauce are excellent, as is the veal Don Peppe. That said, the chicken scarpariello is among the worst I've had. The chicken is almost always overcooked and dry, and the sausage is bland and uninteresting, but the pleasantly tomato based, 'olive oily' sauce in all the dishes, even in the Scarpariello, is delicious and begs to be soaked up with that hunk of Brooklyn bread that is plentiful and replenished at the diner's whim.
Normally, I like red wine at room temperature, but the home made red here comes to the table ice cold, and probably hides a multitude of sins, but that's not a negative. Sins or not, the wine is wonderful and absolutely refreshing.
The prices are more than bearable, and overall you just can't go wrong here.
