Baked beans and jonnycakes

The following was prompted by the recent discussion on the anthropology/sociology of sweets on the General Topics board.

My mother was from Maine and my father from Rhode Island. As a kid, we usually had baked beans and jonnycakes for Saturday night supper. Question: is this a well-known combination or was it a creative example of "New England fusion" cuisine? If the latter, what are other examples?
