Baked Alaska Disappointment/Astoria,OR

We thought we would head over to Baked Alaska for a nice dinner and sit out on the deck last night with the weather being so warm here.aked Alaska is a gorgeous, fairly new restaurant with breath-taking views of the river. We were told it would be about a fifteen minute wait to sit out on the deck. After about half an hour, the hostess kept apologizing and said a large group was out there and it would probably be an hour.

The inside was very warm, but we said we would have a glass of wine and and an app inside while we waited for dinner out on the deck. I ordered a glass of Pinot Gris that came out lukewarm and actually tasted like colored water. I told the server that it was warm and asked for a chilled glass, another one as brought out which was worse and even more tasteless.

I have never sent a glass of wine back and very frequently order white wine while in Oregon to accompany the seafood that I adore here. I requested a glass of the Savingnon Blanc which was also warm and just didn't taste right.

We were begining to wonder about this place. We ordered the crabcakes which were flavorful and very good but decided to pull out and go to Fulio's for our dinner.

I was just glad to get out of there, views are great but service was not up to standard and the wine btg just didn't cut it.

Fulio's is always wonderful and Peter Roscoe has done an excellent job of making this one of Astoria's finest restaurants. Always full, service always efficient and the food is fantastic and made with only local fresh ingredients.

I ordered a glass of Pinot Gris (something from Italy) and it was perfect. We split the Insalata di Spinaci which is a very fresh and beautifully presented spinach salad with warm balsamic mustard mushroom and pancetta vinagrette with goat cheese (bought fresh each week), tomato and hard boiled egg.

We shared this salad and Peter actually just gave us a complimentary salad as he knows we like to split things.

For our entree we shared the linguini con pollo & sunghi which is string noodles with chicken mushroom/whie sauce. Delicious! For dessert we shared the flourless chocolate torte which is rich and decadent. We ordered a nicely prepared steak for my son back at the house and two extra desserts for the girls.

A delightful (as always) and wonderful comeback from the mediocre Baked Alaska experience. Fulio's is a must for anyone in the area. ***kim***
