Best Baguette in Calgary

Scary Bill | Jul 12, 201509:07 AM 3
Prairie Provinces Calgary Baguette

Just read an EnRoute article about the ten best baguettes in Paris. As I'm not in Paris I'm looking for candidates for the best baguette in Calgary. My go to is Ace sold in several stores and restaurants, a very good baguette even though it is shipped frozen and finished on site. I'm looking for a plain baguette, no variations whatsoever, just a white flour baguette. Any suggestions? Thanks to all who reply.

Bill, you're the one that the rest of us ask for such advice! And the ACE bread is very good, but, if you want the tedious task of taste testing, I will give you a list:
    Sidewalk Citizen
    Yann Patisserie
    Manuel Latrue
    Eclair de lune

    I will think of more

      Tibbles, my head swelleth over!

Ok, not really, but thanks. When I moved to Calgary from Toronto eight years ago, I figured it would be a bit more difficult to source certain products, so I figured I'd have to do my homework. While Calgary isn't Toronto food-wise, it is very cosmopolitan and in certain areas really excels, and gets better all the time.

One thing tha disappoints me is that Chowhound Prairie is in decline. I found it really helpful when I first moved here. While I understand there are more popular sites for restaurants, there are none other than Chowhound that are geared towards all things food. That said, I find the best resto recs come from Chowhound since the other sites get a lot of reviews from people who sound like professional whiners who know nothing about food and the restaurant business.

And thanks for Eclair de Lune, I'll have to check it out, and for more than just the baguettes.

Ok, I know I'm late in responding, but I finally tried the Sidewalk Citizen baguette at the Simmons Building, and, no real surprise, but it was very good. I say no surprise because, we are spoiled now in Calgary, with a wealth of excellent restaurants, bakers, brewers. It wasn't always like this, and I am really liking Calgary in it's current form. Anyway, the SCB baguette was almost too crusty, but not tough, with a nice chewy interior that had enough substance for butter or cheese spreading. The crust had a slight salt to it that reminded me of fresh pretzel.
