Bagel Gourmet vs Barney's, Providence (was: Best "Basics" in Providence)

Ok, I tried Bagel Gourmet on a recommendation from this board and directly compared them to my Providence standard bearer, Barney's...

Overall, not bad! I'd put them at a solid #2 behind Barney's. BG's bagels are crispier than Barney's, but I found them tougher overall as well. I enjoyed eating them just as much as Barney's alone or with a spread, but with a sandwich, I much preferred Barney's. BG's bagels were much, much better than the firmer white bread that passes for bagels at East Side Market or Whole Foods, for example.

I still find Barney's to have the best overall combination of thin, crispy outside with softer yet chewy inside.

PS: A surprisingly acceptable bagel is at Au Bon Pain in Rhode Island Hospital. Since I'm presuming they are sourced from the same place or at least the same preparation recipe, I would imagine the same would hold true at the Thayer St. location as well.
