The bad news about our dinner at DANIEL......

hungrynewyorker | Apr 7, 201205:52 AM

Recently had a big birthday dinner for 2 with my partner at Daniel.
First time for both of us, it's been on our list forever, so naturally
we had high expectations.

Wow, what a letdown.

Almost from the get-go, the service was confused, lacking, and
disorganized, with many unexplained delays and lapses. The staff
looked positively frenetic scampering around the room. All this led to
an uneven and awkwardly paced meal. Doesn't management understand that
this conveys an atmosphere of behind the scenes chaos which is best
kept behind the scenes?

On top of that, our two primary servers could barely speak English. We
had to repeatedly ask for clarifications when it came time to describe
the dishes.

Then, the noise level. Way too high. A family group of four sitting
next to us were acting like they were sitting at home in their living
room - voices raised, shrill comments and all.

Now, on to the food. Lackluster. Unimaginative. Correct, safe, and
yes, tasty. But hello? This is supposed to be one of the top
restaurants in NY? Just not so. We both are regulars at Boulud Sud and
thought Boulud Sud is far superior. We had the eight course tasting
menu -- the sauces on all of the protein dishes were essentially the
same -- classic French, demi-glace. Very nice, but completely
uninspiring and totally redundant by the time you're on the third

The only memorable part of the evening was when Liza Minnelli walked
in and sat in a nearby table.

All in all, a disappointing, completely fogettable, and very expensive evening.
