My last prior visit to Jack's Oyster House was mixed and they gave me a small gift certificate to alleviate my unhappiness.
About a week ago I went with my wife and a mutual friend for lunch - early to get in ahead of the lobby crowd. I decided to take no chances and I ordered a dish I enjoy and is seldom available elsewhere any more - calves liver with onions. (No groaning please) It is a "signature" there and their boast, I figured would be to my benefit.
Imagine a soft, perhaps "ground" substance covered with fried onions. Not what any liver lover would expect. Or enjoy!
I have always made excuses in the past for the little dings in previous dinning experiences there and indeed the local newspaper still heaps praise on Jack's; after all, it is a spot with a great history. But I can't eat history and so will have to write it off my list of Albany restaurants. What a shame!
