Really Bad Experience at Patois

Chris in JH | Aug 22, 2003 10:33 AM

I will never eat at Patois on Smith Street again. My partner and I went to have a meal there and were told that it was only 10 minutes until a table openned up. No problem, we'll just order a glass of wine and relax.

We were seated at a wine bar to wait, but then were completely ignored. OK, I thought, they're busy.
We waited. And waited. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. Twenty minutes. Nothing.
During this time, we had noticed that several other couples and groups had come in to the wine bar and had been served immediately. We tried to get the wait staff's attention as they whisked passed us, but they ignored us.
Then, another couple who came in after us (and had already gotten their wine to sip while they waited) were seated at the only table that had opened up. I figured that the hostess just made a mistake.

When I asked her what was going on, that we'd been waiting for 20 minutes and that the other couple was seated before us, she didn't really seem to care. Then we asked to speak with the manager about this, who also didn't really seem to care. He didn't even apologize!
We were flabbergasted and quite angry. To be completely ignored AND passed over for a table deserves at least a bit of concern on the part of the manager or hostess. We obviously left and vowed never to return.

One note: I don't know if we were treated that way because we're gay or because we're racially mixed, but I can't rule it out. (We were the only gay couple and only racially mixed couple in the restaurant.)
