After reading a number of positive posts on this board about The Independent, I decided to try it out. I made reservations for Saturday night at 8 pm. When we arrived promptly at 8, we were told by the hostess that they were way overbooked (5 different people had taken reservations, she explained) and it would be at least 30 minutes until we were seated. She apologized half-heartedly. We felt trapped because there aren't many other restaurants around, so we decided to stay, despite the fact that we were pretty peeved that our reservations were not being honored. About an hour(!!!) later, we were finally seated. At no point in the evening did anyone offer a sincere apology or any complimentary food or drinks. And then even once we were seated our service wasn't all that hot--although friendly and competent, our waitress had too many tables, and my water glass spent the majority of the night empty.
That said, the food was tasty and decently priced. I had a marinated olive starter and a sauteed squid appetizer as my entree. The squid was tender and yummy, and it came with chickpeas and tomatoes and two very meaty chickpea fries. One of my friends had the mussels, which he said were great; another had the special softshell crab entree, which he said was too greasy (he prefers the lighter tempura variety he gets at Asian restaurants); and another had the very reasonably priced prix fixe for $26. I can't remember what she had for an appetizer or her main course, but she had a very rich (too rich I would say) chocolate mousse with oatmeal cookie for dessert. Our total bill for four, including a round of drinks (to while away the time at the bar during our interminable wait), tax, and tip, was $120. Although I liked the food and the decor, I will not return.
