Bad Experience at Gonzo

Mike | Jan 30, 2003 03:27 PM

I joined two friends for dinner at 8:15 at Gonzo last night. We got there 8:05. They had clearly overbooked reservations as we were not seated until around 8:45 and there were many others waiting by the bar area to be seated as well. Incidentally, the bar area is barely big enough to accommodate the people drinking/eating at the bar, let alone a bunch more people waiting for tables.

We split a wild mushroom pizza as an app. It was pretty good, I was not particularly fond of the cheese on the pizza, but that was just my taste as opposed to anything being wrong with it.

Our main course was a real disappointment. I had the braised short ribs, my friends had a lamb ragu pasta. None of our meals had any flavor to them. My meal in particular seemed to be devoid of all flavor. I felt like I was eating a soggy rice cake.

We skipped desert after the entree fiasco. Mr. Scotto was in the restaurant, but not cooking, he seemed to be teaching the other chefs how to cook. He also visited a number of tables, which is a nice gesture. However, we were glad he did not stop by our table as we didn't want to break the bad news to his face.

In summary, considering the great reviews this place got, we were extremely disappointed. I will not be back.
