We took my in-laws to Addie's in Rockville over the weekend for what we thought would be one of the highlights of their weekend with us, and were really disappointed. Now we hadn't been, but we'd heard great things about it from lots of people so we thought it was a safe bet. I don't know if they were having an off night or if the place is starting to go downhill -- I'll be curious if others have had a similar experience lately.
In advance of going, I knew that the atmosphere would be rather...well, rustic, but I was envisioning "rustic" in the eclectic, funky, modern sense. Instead, the outside tent tables looked rather dirty, unmaintained, and just plain unappetizing. And the view of the adjacent parking lot and lovely Rockville Pike left a lot to be desired.
That would have all been fine if the food itself was decent. Instead, our blue cheese, walnut and pear salad came without walnuts and pears. My halibut entree arrived ice cold and then charred and dry when they put it back under the heat lamp. My mother-in-law's tuna was also cold and my husband's roasted chicken was drenched in sauce and had a soggy consistency with little flavor. The only highlight was the toffee chocolate cake that we split for dessert -- and thank goodness we ordered it, if for no other reason than to take the taste out of our mouths from those entrees.
And just to round out our experience, the service was really substandard for any restaurant, let alone one as pricey as Addie's. My in-laws had no more than a 5 second exchange in the middle of ordering their meals and the waitress impatiently interrupted to suggest that perhaps she should come back when we were really ready to order. She also forgot to give us silverware with our dessert and neglected my father-in-law's request to have salad dressing on the side. No apologies for any of this.
We were so embarrassed to have taken my husband's parents to this restaurant. Throughout the whole meal, I kept wondering if I had the wrong "Addie's" but I double-checked when we got home and it was, in fact, the very restaurant that gets so many rave reviews on this board. I'm almost never critical of restaurants, but when I spend $250 on a meal for four, I expect apples and walnuts on my apple and walnut salad! Among other things...
As I said, I'm curious if others have had similar experiences at Addie's.
