On a recent Sunday, I recently stopped by Backhaus, the new bakery in downtown San Mateo, for the first time. Just after noon, the shelves were already pretty decimated. I chose the whole wheat-chocolate bread, baguette, plain croissant, chocolate-almond croissant and a chocolate chip cookie.

Most impressive were the two breads. Especially the light and crisp baguette that held up in texture despite being exposed to a drenching downpour, and it revived the next couple mornings for breakfast with a brush of water and light reheating. The chocolate bread was moist and chewy from natural leavening with a sturdy crunchy crust and made great toast over the next few days.

The chocolate chip cookie had a graham cracker-like flavor that was unexpected, and also a slightly gritty texture. The croissants were fine but there are better tasting laminated pastries out there.
