Just tried Babu on McDougal street (below Kati Roll Company & Hummus Place). It's sort of pan-asian(?), we mostly stuck to the Indian food, which was very good.
Had a very spicy and tasty cold potato salad appetizer (Churmur?), but didn't care for the puffed rice appetizer which had an unusual spice that didn't agree with us at all (probably very authentic, but not to our taste).
My wife had the shrimp toast, which she said were much more interesting than in a typical chinese restaurant. We are vegetarian (and fish in my wife's case) so I can't comment on the majority of the menu, which are meat dishes (several mutton).
They are short on veggie entrees, we pretty much exhausted the choices in two visits, but they were all quite good - an extremely well prepared eggplant dish, a very nice potato curry (served with very good dal and puri), and an excellent "vegetable side curry" that came on a Thali with rice, kachumber, and a delicious tomato chutney. The "curry" was basically aloo gobhi, although spiced differently than usual. I think they turned the side vegetable into a whole meal by mistake.
There were some other wrinkles with the service, but the food is good enough that we will return.
