Babita's in San Gabriel

monkey | Sep 30, 200411:45 AM

My husband and I took our 2 year old son to Babita's last night. I had the chiles en nogada, which the chef said he just started making again. It was delicious. The pork stuffed inside the chile was very tender and well seasoned, and the walnut cream sauce was just sweet enough. I have never had a dish quite like this. It had great balance of spicy, savory, and sweet. My husband had the shrimp tampalobompo, which was very spicy but flavorful from the habanero chiles. The service was great, and the chef came out to describe some of the dishes himself. They even accomodated our son and brought out some rice for him before the rest of the food was served.

I would encourage chowhounds to support this place. While we were there last night, they only had one other table there. Main courses run about $15 to $22. It's a little pricier than average Mexican restaurants but well worth it. It's located on San Gabriel Blvd, between Valley and I-10.
