Baba Neo in Mountain View inhabits the location of what was a pretty down in the tooth Vietanamese place. They have given the place a makeover and it is looking plush. The waitstaff seemed almost overjoyed to see us and the place was about half full for lunch.
The lunch specials are very reasonable although you can order off the extensive menu as well.
The nasi goreng, Singapore rice noodles and beef satay were all excellant.
The satay was tender and succulent and presented with a small charcoal fired hibatchi for reheating the meat.
The Hainan chicken rice came up a little short. The rice was too dry and the chicken could have been poached with a little more care and tenderness.
As the awareness of Malaysian/Singaporian cuisine
grows, so will the number of places that offer a glimpse into that region's traditional, grandma driven cuisine. Baba Neo is a fine place to get started.
