OK, yesterday i tasted some banh mi from Ba Xuyen in Sunset Park, Brooklyn... WOW! It was a great sandwich overall, better bread than the other joint on Broome street, and the sliced meats (pork pate, vietnamese salami, head cheese)were a better quality, but there wasn't enough bbq pork in it. The butter or butter spread was more plentiful then at So 1 on Broome, which made for a more moist sandwich, and there was definitely more heat on these than on the Broome street versions. I also had the meatball version, which wasn't great, it was barely good. The meatballs didn't seem particularly Vietnamese, I wonder if it's just an Americanized take on the banh mi. They even tasted vaguely Italian. I think I prefer the Broome street sandwiches to the Sunset Park sandwiches. Convenience is a factor, but putting that aside, I think that the larger amount of bbq pork, and the higher quality pickled carrot/daikon does it for me. It would be great if the better qualities of both places could combined to form an unbeatable SUPER BANH MI, with Ba Xuyen's bread, butter, sliced meats and noticeable amount of spice, And Broome street's pickled veggies and larger portion of bbq pork. I think I'll go back to both places (more than once) before I make my final decision, but I like keeping any interested Hounds up to date with my sandwich research missions.
