A bit further down on this board, a poster inquired about a good place to eat for a celebration dinner, not too distant from Coronado. She mentioned that she and her party would be staying at Loew's Coronado Bay Resort.
Well, I've never been there, but I recall when that property first opened (what? 25 years ago?) The Azzura Point restaurant got a LOT of press, and more than one reviewer raved that it was among the best in the San Diego region. Since then, the very talented chef who won those raves has long departed, and I'm sure the place has undergone numerous changes since then. As late as four years ago, Michael Stebner (now of Region) ran the kitchen there, so it had to have been good then. What I find curious, though, is that I NEVER see the Azzura Point mentioned any more -- not in any of the usual published restaurant compilations, and certainly not on this board.
I guess I'm wondering if the lack of any recent notice is because its star has descended so far as to become indistinguishable from the mob of mediocre hotel restaurants, or might it simply be the case that its off-the-beaten-path location (halfway down the Silver Strand) have left it exclusively to the guests of the resort. The few listings that I *do* find, show the price range as "deluxe" and indicate a bit more formality than most places in San Diego. Has anyone here tried the Azzura Point in the past year or two, or have you heard any *reliable* reports about the place?
. . jim strain in san diego.
